SINGAPORE - Three impoverished Pakistani men checked into a lodge in Rowell Road last month, and survived by selling tissue paper.

Yesterday, two of them were arrested in connection with the murder of the third man, whose body was found stuffed in a suitcase on Wednesday, with his legs severed.

Police were on their trail quickly.

At about 11am yesterday, the officers showed up at 24-hour shopping centre Mustafa Centre.

The specific question that was asked of Raja, who works in the hardware department, was: "Did anyone buy a saw worth $119?"

And the 55-year-old recalled that someone had.

Mr Raja was then taken to a security room where he identified the man on surveillance-camera footage.

The suspects, Rashid, 43, and Rizwan, 25, were arrested in Rowell Road, at about 3pm yesterday.

The owner of the lodge, who did not want to be named, told My Paper yesterday that Rashid and the victim, Mohamed Noor, 59, had stayed in the same room since arriving in the middle of last month.

Rizwan had arrived later in the month and stayed separately.

The three men would usually leave the lodge in the morning, and return in the evening to pay their rent - $18 per person per night.

The three men were to leave Singapore this month.

The last time the owner saw the suspects was on Wednesday, around 6pm, when the bloody luggage was found.

"They did everything as per normal. That's something hard to digest," the owner said.

SINGAPORE - A man in his 20s was found dead at Dunlop Street last night.

A Stomp reader who was near the scene sent a photo of the cordoned off area to the citizen journalism website.

A police spokesperson said that they received a call at 6.28pm, requesting assistance at a building along Dunlop Street.

He said: "Upon arrival, it was established that a man in his 20s was found lying motionless at the said location. He was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene."

The police are investigating the unnatural death.

Agree... kudos to the cops. A reminder of the good old Singapore efficiency with effectiveness that has been gradually eroded

These are things that we take for granted except when it fails

actually I think it's not that difficult if you have a dead body you can identify, csi movies show there's clothes forensics can search for hair once there's fingerprints there's a face find out who the person is from there search among the known associates talk to neighbors somebody ought to know something a debt a quarrel perhaps. it's harder if you have a body you can't identify immediately like the headless woman at whampoa river, no head also no arms. means no prints no dental records maybe am guessing search missing persons list or overstay list but What happens if you have a missing person but no physical body?

I read one chilling account how mafia in italy dealt their enemies really gave me the shivers the methods they used.
Csi movies are... Movies Smile just as 金庸 novel has some historic truth Smile

U need to utilize the equipments and database as well, just as Malaysia custom didn't use the database

To paraphrase: Markets are not uniform nor efficient Smile

These guys are foreigners. Much harder to track their lodging. But of course they were dumb enough to dump the body near where they live.

I've been in operations / settlements before and learnt to appreciate the details and effort rather than just big big picture alone
csi are movies but these days tv viewers are also not dumb so the producers need to do their research to mirror the real thing or make the story believable and smart.

My view is singapore also very small place eventually how you hide a dead body it will be found and once there's a physical dead body there will be a clue on it that will link to somewhere.

In Singapore, this is how the employment market is like:

If you put an ad seeking for worker, any tourist is free to apply. We are one of the very very few countries in the world that allows any tourist to apply for jobs here. That is why all my contacts and friends who are in HR say that whenever they put up a job ad, foreigners will usually outnumber locals (PRs and Singaporeans).

Singaporeans need to know that for every job opening here, they are competing not only against fellow citizens, PRs, foreigner workers (S-pass or E-pass). They are also competing against any tourist who happens to be in Singapore and scouring the want ads.

We also issue work permits for PRCs to peddle sex here. So, it is not surprising for us to issue permits for South Asian men to sell tissue paper here. Forged credentials are also easy to obtain in South Asia, and it takes a long time before the relevant authorities can discover that they are fakes. Which by then, some of these South Asians would have already left.
