You misunderstood the republic system. Firstly u can form the govt as long you get 50% seats. So Mr Low will not be leading a ministry with 33% vote
Secondly it is run on a constituency basis and not popular vote ie aggregate vote. That means you can be the government as long you get 50% seats even if you only get 40% votes nation-wide. This can happen when you lose seats in highly populated constituencies but win seats at smaller ones.

The way I come to understand/see it, there's always been some fight between the government and her people. For example, maybe everybody buys their house at $1 million you buy yours at $5 million [if you really have a family what's going to happen; which will you choose?]. Temporary "truce" only, in the name of harmony. The way I see it.

I am of the view that, it is not how many parties or oppositions you have. It depends on the quality of the representatives and their reason by been in politics.
There are many great examples of how multiple party systems fail big time. The greatest example is U.S.A when there are so many lies and false truths etc... The politician spend so much time fighting among themselves and fighting for their lobbies than for the citizens.
If the opposition like WP can show what they can bring that benefits the current system, I am very sure many will vote for them as they see the benefits, but as far as I can see, no such value has been brought forward that I am aware off.
Maybe the solution is not demolish and create a new system, but to upgrade the current system to support the needs it is not supporting.
If the ruling party can defend its policies , then there is no reason to be afraid of losing votes.

if the teacher teaches very well then there is no reason that the students could not score well in the exam?
if the chef is a talented, he has no reason to worry that his customers do not enjoy their food?
May be we could re-phase as:
What are some of the reasons that the voters will not vote in favour of the G, despite the G is able to justify its policies successfully?

I give credit where credit is due and calling a spade a spade where require.
Our current government has done fantastically when it comes to building up S'pore economically.
Can it be done better, of course... depending on how you look at it and how much you willing to give.
I think in the process of building up the nation, the government should also consider the vast majority of our citizens' feelings and concerns, and not just bulldoze everything ahead.
Singapore now is just like a teenager growing up, do you always listen to what your parents say?
Does your parents know how you feel as a teenager?
After repeated warnings from parents, do you still go ahead and do what your parents said not to do?
Generation gap anyone?? or maybe in this case, even wealth gap/intellectual gap/emotional gap?
Do I believe the opposition can do the job, no... not at this point in time.
Credibility is not there as yet...
Do I think the opposition can come up with some better policies... case in point, the CPF issue at hand?
No idea, nothing from them at this point in time....

Ask yourself this question ; Why the ruling party didn't have to worry about losing votes in the 60's 70's , 80's or even 90's ?
Your should use better analogies if you can .

Could it be we are more complacent?
And hence the willingness to cast our vote to give pressure to ruling party?
Might be the opposition is using the right messaging?
And hence the willingness to give them a chance to gives alternative voice to fellow citizen?
Or probably, there are enough young voters who do not understand what type of life we had in 60s?
And hence their benchmark for ruling party is based on growth, peaceful and current standard?
Or perhaps, the ruling party really really very very bad and never take care of them?
Hence, they really have no choices but to vote for oppositions?

If by explaining the policy carefully, convincingly can win votes, then the ruling parties will spend most of their time planning and dialogue with everybody.
