What a dream... Rail service seems the preferred mass transport vehicle, over other means... Mr. Buffett is right, the prospect of rail service is promising...

Chinese experts ‘in discussions’ over building high-speed Beijing-US railway

BEIJING — China is considering plans to build a high-speed railway line to the United States, the country’s official media reported yesterday (May 8).

The proposed line would begin in north-east China and run up through Siberia, pass through a tunnel underneath the Pacific Ocean then cut through Alaska and Canada to reach the continental US, according to a report in the state-run Beijing Times newspaper.

Crossing the Bering Strait in between Russia and Alaska would require about 200km of undersea tunnel, the paper said, citing Mr Wang Mengshu, a railway expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

“Right now we’re already in discussions. Russia has already been thinking about this for many years,” Mr Wang said.

The project — nicknamed the “China-Russia plus America line” — would run for 13,000km, about 3,000km further than the Trans-Siberian Railway. The entire trip would take two days, with the train travelling at an average of 350km/h.

two days seem quite long. why would one choose a train over a flight?
US cannot even get their own HSR approval.
i have just one word for it

I don't have data offhand to support it, but it is more economical for mass transport, either for people or merchandise over long distance.

trains are economical for mass transport & merchandise but the equation changes when it high speed train. The cost of maintaining & running of high speed trains is much higher than a normal train so the same ratios may not hold true.
Again i have no data to support my point. Big Grin
no lah, it takes 2 days because every country wants to capitalize on it so they will build stops at intervals so people will stop and shop help the local economy.

Just like the msia-spore high speed rail, msia side got 3 stops and consider
1 sgd > m$2 means spending in spore is more expensive so by the time the passengers reach spore all their shopping already done in msia side. Big Grin
