Go ahead, let your children fail - ST by Megan Mcardle

After my talks, a shyly 15 yr old girl came up and ask:
"I understand what you are saying about trying new things, and hard things, but I'm in an IB programme and only about 5% will get 4.0, so how can I try a subject where I might not get an A?"

Raise a child to only study and you get a brat-ST by Eve Yap

Hellen Chen, who was in Singapore to deliver her love seminar on Feb 15, says it is one of many she came across in her 19 years as a consultant to families.

"The biggest mistake well-meaning parents make is to adopt an 'all you need to do is to study' concept"

"These parents try to suggest or 'guide' their children but in a way that undermine the kids' independence. After time, the kids have no willingness to fight for their future or to go thru struggles."

Hellen came across a 18-year college students:
"when he went to college at 18, he got lost at a mall.
Socially, he had few friends because his parents had spoilt him and he expected his friends to serve him as well."

She cites an example of a girl, whose mum sat next to her for 2 hours daily for years, ensuring she practiced the piano.
Turned off, the girl, now 16, "doesn't touch her piano anymore."
