When you guys do your research on a company, how do you go about finding who are the competitors?

Also, how can you find out how many percent market share does the company currently holds in its sector?

I am new to this so any advise is greatly appreciated!

Information about competitors, suppliers, and major customers can be found in Company's prospectus.
One other source is from the analyst report on the counter. Some of the analyst reports have the info on the key competitors.

prospectus is for IPO right? what about non IPO?
Could you point me in the right direction
best thing to do is to buy a small stake in the company, attend the AGM and ask.

Oh, and skip the buffet, look for the CFO after the AGM and ask the bloke all the questions you want. Normally they will answer questions which are too sensitive to answer during the Q&A session.
Thanks for the answers!
I am invest in the US so I can only answer ideas where you can get the information.

Normally there are various sources,
1) Analyst reports (as mentioned)
2) Paid/free industry reports
3) Industry trade journals
4) Antitrust lawsuits - These filings normally are more accurate since antitrust officials have to deal with the case objectively.
5) IPO filings of company or competitors, especially recent ones.

That said, much have these figures might differ abit.

Moreover, market share numbers are more of a plug and play number. You have to be precise about what the defined market is. Eg, you cant compare a WD-40 with Benjamin Moore even though they are in the chemicals industry. You have to be even precise with the sectors etc etc. So the numbers you get do not necessarily present the true picture.
Analyst Day or investors presentations. But not all companies do it
Is there a place where I can find a compilation of analyst reports covering a particular company?

I know some companies compile it on their investor relations page, but for the others?
Also, a question on institutional investors. I've read up the definition on institutional investors, but I still don't quite understand it. Based on investopedia, it is a non-bank investor, yet not retail also.

Thought I'd use an example to clarify. I extracted this from Sheng Siong AR2013
