Well, online has the least priority during weekend for me.

After reading through this thread, I must say, the future of telcos look bright , at least in Singapore. We have the entire next generation (and possibly future generations) hooked onto social media and the internet. It is like an addictive drug.

I always see this particular scene being repeated in public.

The child is super noisy and restless. Parents give their phone/tablet to the child. The child becomes completely quiet and enjoy playing online games (angry bird, candy crush etc etc/watching videos. Parents and child are happy.

For me, it is ok to let the child play games and watch videos. But maybe the parents should go a step further and educate the young child on basic etiquette - use an earpiece. The videos could be really loud and this is inconsiderate to other people in public.

I'm more with yeokiwi.

Before TV and gaming consoles, some parents may also be worried about their child burying their faces in books all day.

People behaviour rarely changed; only the tools have changed

Just ask the wife when we ignore her by hiding behind the morning/evening papers...

well, anything that is too much is not good, so..

IT gadgets are just tools... have to let the kids know that..

Limit their time too for their eyes to rest!

I think with availability of tech gadgets and social media people have become tech savvy but socially awkward. they don't know how to "express" themselves in public and find it awkward to do so.

^^ IQ up EQ down... that is going to be the trend if this goes on.

Teenagers now ACTUALLY say LOL to me. Not dissimilar to what sgd wrote about the concert. Their reality is now the digital space rather than the sensory world around them.

As parents we know that there is he easy way and there is the hard way. Most people will take the easy way out and buy some peace. The harder way is more effective in the long run but takes much effort in the short run

I always see children playing with phones during meal times.
I always remind my daughter that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.
Same thing for TV, no TV when having meals.

Perhaps yes, the ipads, iphones, are replacing TV but
it is still anti-social behaviour, if you asked me.

I am in JKT airport old town coffee and I can see everyone who is alone is eating and playing with handphone.

NTU launches mobile phone-free campaign

Students from Nanyang Technological University’s social campaign aims to encourage youth to put phones face-down to give friends’ full attention

SINGAPORE — A social campaign aimed at addressing mobile phone usage amongst youth has officially been launched today (Dec 20) by students from Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.

The campaign, “Put It On Friend Mode”, works like the “Silent mode” and “Flight mode” found in mobile phones today, and encourages people to put their phone in “Friend mode”, or a face-down position. The campaign was inspired by the groups’ numerous personal experiences in observing fellow youth being distracted by their phones while meeting up with their friends, and its organisers produced a video highlighting this trend.

For some unexplainable reason, I'm still buying books and CDs for myself and Lego toys for my son. The phone and tablet are kept out of his reach.
