E-cigarettes now a burning question for US regulators

Growing popularity of smokeless devices could help smokers quit habit, but critics say candy flavours could encourage kids to start smoking

NEW YORK — At the Henley Vaporium, one of a growing number of e-cigarette lounges sprouting up in New York and other United States cities, patrons can indulge in their choice of more than 90 flavours of nicotine-infused vapour, ranging from bacon to bubble gum.

The lounge, located in Manhattan’s trendy Lower East Side, features plush seating, blaring rock music, and fresh juice and coffee. A sprawling sign on one wall lists all the carcinogens that e-cigarette users avoid by kicking their smoking habits and using the devices instead.

But the growing popularity of e-cigarettes has not escaped the notice of the industry’s critics, who have stepped up calls for new regulations, including bans on their use in public places, even though the scientific evidence about exposure to their vapours remains inconclusive.

Selling for about US$30 to US$50 (S$37.60 to S$62.66) each, e-cigarettes are slim, reusable, metal tubes containing nicotine-laced liquids that come in exotic flavours. When users puff on the device, the nicotine is heated and releases a vapour that, unlike cigarette smoke, contains no tar, which causes cancer and other diseases.

The product, introduced in China in 2006, has become a worldwide trend at least in part because it may help smokers of regular cigarettes break the habit.

it looks like smoke but it's really just water vapor. There is no smoke and no chemicals or tar in e-cigarettes other than the nicotine.

But all these are just excuses and justifications for smokers to hop on to using something "cleaner" but it won't make anybody quit if they have no intention of doing so. (Smokers are a rather hard bunch to persuade to quit)

Before when I had a 2 pack a day habit I was like that also, when I hopped on to nicotine gum and skin patches I justified it was a cleaner habit but quitting was never the intention in the end the cost didn't justify I went back to smoking normal cigarettes.

There are so far 2 ways to quit either going cold turkey or taking zyban bupropion tablets. I used zyban once a day for a month and managed to wean it off.

I was on my way to Europe for a holiday.

Mid flight, I went to the pantry area for a snack.

I saw a man smoking there (obviously with e-cigs).

He sucked in the e-cigs forcefully and then puff out the smokes (from his mouth lar ... what were you thinking?)

A air stewardess was already there and asking him not to smoke....

A few passengers was watching him too.

This guys show his e-cig and says that it is not a cigs, there is no fire/light inside too... as he open up the e-cigs and show the interior to everyone.

The episode goes on but I return to my seat...

What-a ****.

++++++++++++++
Footnote:
Although FAA did not ban e-cigs, most airline has a strictly no-smoking policy and that includes e-cigs too.

its true there's no smoke all just water vapor, I've seen some people "puffing" away in night clubs, everybody stare but really obviously it's not smoke and it doesn't smell or irritate.

but is offense here still I guess it's if the government can get a cut it should be allowed here problem is enforcement how do you stop people from buying it cheaper online?
In Singapore, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are currently prohibited under Section 16 (1) of the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act, which is enforced by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). This legislation prohibits the importation, distribution, sale or offer for sale of any confectionery or other food product or any toy or other article that is designed to resemble a tobacco product or the packaging of which is designed to resemble the packaging commonly associated with tobacco products. HSA takes a serious view on any person who contravenes the law. Those guilty of the offence are liable to a fine of up to $5, 000 upon conviction.

Well it still doesn't stop people getting and using it.

consider the example I mentioned someone puffing away in a club, it doesn't have any burning smell and doesn't irritate, and water vapor smoke just disappear into thin air if someone does it tactically how does anybody know?

Honestly as a non-smoker now I can say there's no problem for me if I'm eating and somebody puffing it away at the same table it doesn't irritate. it's the government that will have issue with that.
Mmm.... government again?

I am a property agent and not government.

1. I certainly will not leave the table if my friend smoke in the same table when we eat. This is because I chose to sit and eat together with my friend.

2. I certainly feel bad when someone smoking in front of me (even if he is my friend) and yes, even I chose to sit with him while he smoke... I definitely feel bad.

3. The story will be very different if there are kids around. You can trusted that we will walk away... even he is my friend. There is no way that I allow the kids to suffer. We will be out for a fresh air and return later on.

Morale of the story:
Smoking can kill, why risk the life of your kids or risk the life of the young one?

Corollary:
Will you encourage your kids to smoke?

No political in my comment kah, I referred to gov is because of tax. If the gov has a tax revenue from e-cigarettes I don't see why it should not be allowed the problem as I mentioned is enforcement how do you prevent somebody buying it online and shipping it back? With normal cigarettes you can deploy sniffer dogs at custom border checkpoints how do detect small sealed vials of liquid nicotine? That's something they need to think about.

I suppose you need to be in the presence of somebody using such devices to judge for yourself whether it is put off. And visually with children around - not good but then again these days kids know everything from sufing internet I don't think much will surprise them.Big Grin
