How many of you read TV TELE TEXT? i do almost at the end of the day before i sleep.
Where can we get substitutes?
Like when is your love one's plane landing in Changi Airport, etc....
Anyone knows why TV TELETEXT TRANSMISSION going to end soon?
Is it because of FOC it's to end or something better coming up?
I think with the Internet becoming increasingly accessible to the general public due to the advent of smart phones and laptops, Teletext has become obsolete. Passenger arrival times - Changi Airport website has the details. Stock quotes - SGX has it. News - CNA has it etc.

Because it is taking up MediaCorps resources and did not give them much revenue. I just feel sad for those senior citizens who depend on Teletext to given them stock information. There is nothing better coming out. MediaCorp has suggested to use phone apps to get all the information. By the way, there are only 30 days in the month of September.

My parents used it to check 4D numbers.
It's sad to see teletext go, it's like seeing another free parking space replaced by a gantry.
I recently got a $500++ samsung smart TV to connect to the internet to replace my dead TV(which lasted 7yrs )
Price is only half of what I paid for the former LCD TV.
I think it's not really worth the while to buy very big/expensive TVs for the average folk.
1. Houses are not getting any bigger, why do we need a 50+" TV?
2. TV is sunken cost(not even a depreciating asset), it's not worth anything 3 years down the road.

This a good case of you want FOC services, you can't complain or demand.
And i am one of them who has made it a habit to read news in TV TELETEXT before going to bed. And i can internet too. (AS i was a technician ).
Many old folks don't. i know even one ex high post banker who is already 75, doesn't want to learn internet. He is busy and happy with his other hobbies- regular majong and golf. i think there are many like him who just don't see the needs to internet. After all learning to TV TELETEXT is more than enough for these OLD FOLKS like him.
And i use the ipad when oversea not smartphone to internet.
My wife learns how to internet with the ipad too.
i feels smartphone screens are just too small. i dislike SMS using smartphone. But have too at times.
But i see many younger people and some not so young too, just can not take their eyes off the screens of smartphones; everywhere i go, i see. They are mesmerised. In a negative light, they are slaves to smartphones. They just can not let their mind relax or even daydream or studying people around them.
Now! who is the human? And who is the gadget?
They have become one.

Some possible alternatives for those with internet access at home and wants to use the TV for checking basic info,
1. Smart TV - Rather cheap nowadays (no longer considered high end) but the built-in browser can be quite basic and not so user friendly. Check it out at the show room first.
2. Smart DVD Player - Used to be the cheapest alternative when Smart TV was expensive. Check out the built-in browser to see if user friendly enough. Have not checked if this has been replaced by Smart Blu-Ray Players.
3. Apple TV - Will need the iPad / iPhone to control. There're similar boxes for Android devices.
To set up for older folks who're not Computer or Technology literate, either (1) or (2) may be a better option.
Lastly, a possible easier solution would be to get them a Tablet (China ones are very cheap if price is an issue), set the different favourite pages (4D, Stocks, TV Guide,...) and it shouldn't be very difficult to teach them how to use it... Perhaps they'll even get hooked and start using it to watch YouTube videos of movies of their generation...

Agree, Smart TV maybe an alternative but the contents may not be able to duplicate or replace the TV Teletext's contents.

My in law is one that get hooked. Watching all the China and Taiwan serials on Youtube and other China video websites. VERY proficient in searching.
