Will the oil companies with their clout with congress sit back and do nothing? The mass acceptance of this should take decades...

Don't think it will come to Singapore anytime soon. Tesla pulled out of Singapore back in 2011 after failing to join the TIDES scheme. Without the tax exemption, the annual road tax for a Model S comes in around $5-6K depending on the options, and the cost of the car itself is gonna be out of reach for many people, more so with the recent tax hike on (high end) car ownership.

"Unfortunately, Singapore has not turned out to be the market we hoped it would be ... Tesla has decided to focus our limited resources elsewhere," Tesla Motors Asia-Pacific director Kevin Yu told The Straits Times.
