US jobless rate falls but payrolls disappoint

WASHINGTON — The jobless rate in the United States fell last month to its lowest in four-and-a-half years even as employers hired fewer workers than expected, indicating uneven progress in the labour market in the world’s largest economy.

The unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a percentage point to 7.4 per cent, its lowest level since December 2008, while non-farm payrolls grew by 162,000 last month, said the Labor Department.

Economists had forecast the unemployment rate would tick down to 7.5 per cent and payrolls would rise by 185,000.

Let's say, the recovery stories continue, and Fed reduces its QE programme in a controlled manner to reduce impact.

Do you think the economy can sustain itself? I read many reports about how we will be thrown off into a deeper recession. But I'm no economist. Maybe we can discuss this point as well.
