Malaysia’s trade surplus shrinks to smallest since 1997

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s exports contracted for the third successive month in April, squeezing the trade surplus to its smallest in more than 15 years, the Dow Jones news agency reported, suggesting that the country will have to rely on domestic demand to power growth until demand from China and Western markets improves.

Malaysia’s trade surplus fell to 943.2 million Malaysian ringgit (S$380 million) in April from 4.9 billion ringgit in March, according to data from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

It was the lowest level since November 1997, when it was 677 million ringgit.
