Are we consider a news website if we post local and overseas news?
I guess this could be the end of ValueBbddies.
To add, basically if you have 50,000 unique IP address or more coming to your site means you have a large audience of viewers and that has got them worried.

Singapore’s new licensing scheme for news websites announced by the Media Development Authority (MDA) was quickly denounced by many netizens as a censorship measure. A group of concerned netizens called the ‘Free My Internet’ movement has called on the public to join a rally this coming Saturday, June 8, 2013, to demand the withdrawal of the controversial regulation.
Under the new rule, news websites that report on Singapore and which have 50,000 unique IP views a month must secure a license. Further, they must put up a ‘performance bond’ of $50,000. It also has this provision which angered and worried many netizens:
The Licence also makes it clear that online news sites are expected to comply within 24 hours to MDA’s directions to remove content that is found to be in breach of content standards
I think if I host the site on an overseas server there is nothing the MDA could have done, or has any jurisdiction over.
I find it bemusing that the 'news site' that are complaining are those who dun need a license in the first place. So what the fuss about? I remember one of these sites 'protesting' that they got more than 50,000 unique views and asked why they dun need a license?
I know that blogs is not subjected to the license. I'm pretty sure -but not 100% sure - forums are not subjected. It makes no sense. Forums does not employed full-time staffs to go and sniff out news to post here. Forums are a communities of users that share news, views and opinions.
It just another weary example of anti-establishment elements in our society making a mountain out of a molehill just because they feel they can. So every single decision is being politicised. Frankly I'm sick of it. I joined VB to discuss economics not politics. So let's not politicised everything.

It doesn't matter if forums are subjected or not. Once MDA decided and identifies and classes that your site is an online news website you have to abide. So this means if their internet brigade finds some seditious commentary appear on your site, they will ask you to remove within 24 hours or face consequences.
Of course, if they can enforce in the first place why do they need to come out with such ruling. They can't enforce so they using scare tactics and hoping people are honest enough to come forward and say they are an online news website.

Goodness. Talk about art imitating lives. But I suppose sometimes frictional characters makes more sense than real-life precisely because they are friction.
Regardless of how we feel about the govt or society in general. Or who is conning who, the catch-22 situation is unless you choose to live off-grid, you do need a working system to live, work and invest our money in.
As much as I am annoyed for all these societal noises coming out time and again, I suppose I prefer that to worrying about whether I have a place to live, what i'm going to eat or whether I'm going to get killed by guns or mugged in the streets at night.
Be thankful for what we have. And be more careful about what we wished for!

I wish for the overall well being of my fellow s'poreans, and not to stay thankful just because things that affect others don't happen to affect me.
