Air mail 65 cents, data roaming $2,600

I AM an elderly iPhone user who has also been similarly affected by shocking data roaming charges.

I was billed $2,600 by SingTel for data roaming while touring Vietnam last April.

Despite all the hardship caused and grievances aired by customers over this practice, our telco giants have hardly lifted a finger to rectify the situation.

With so many cases revealed over the past few weeks, I hope the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and the three telco giants will rise to the occasion and help salvage this situation, and work towards providing service with a heart.

If data roaming charges continue to be that prohibitive, we might as well block its use, and be content with normal mobile roaming.

I recently sent a document via air mail to Hong Kong and paid 65 cents; I was billed $2,600 for sending out six photos via data roaming in Vietnam.

The roaming charge is calculated per kb or mb.
From the singtel website, the cost is $20 per MB.

$2600/20 = 130 MB.

A typical high res photo is about 3-4 MB. Therefore, 6 photos equal 24Mb.

I suppose the rest of the roaming charges are due to iphone being constantly connected to the vietnam 3G network and sending little data to and fro from vietnam to any server in the world.

Many iphone users are dumb users and they do not know how to switch off the data roaming feature in the handphone.

Iphone is a weird beast. It comes with the data plan locally and the users are pleased with the experiences. But, the users forget that their data bandwidth of the plans is only valid in Singapore.

Mmm..

before 2003, i carry 2 gadgets,

For phone calls, local or overseas,
1) Nokia 688 + Singtel sim card

For local Internet
1) Laptop + USB sim card singtel

For overseas Internet
1) Laptop + USB sim card of that country

Now, iphone combines 2 in 1..
Phone calls + Internet

If your in singapore, it's fine cos the voice & dataplans are cheap. (singapore is very small only...)

If you are oversea, international IDD voice are still cheap, BUT DATA Plans are charged per KB!!

User Beware!
