YouTube has displaced TV: Google’s Schmidt

NEW YORK - Internet video sites should no longer be considered as rivals to television as they have already displaced the medium, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt has said.

Speaking at a gathering of digital advertisers in New York City last night, Mr Schmidt refused to forecast when internet video would displace television, instead declaring: “That’s already happened.”

YouTube starts paid subscription service

LOS ANGELES — Children’s shows like Sesame Street, inspirational monologues by celebrities and campy movies — these are among the offerings on 30 channels that will soon require a paid monthly subscription on YouTube.

“Starting today, we’re launching a pilot programme for a small group of partners that will offer paid channels on YouTube with subscription fees starting at US$0.99 (S$1.22) per month,” YouTube said on a blogpost.

“Every channel has a 14-day free trial, and many offer discounted yearly rates.”

The average price of the channels is around US$2.99.
