Am posting this as I was very shocked and saddened by his passing - I still remember his role as "Ah Shui" in the Awakening, Singapore's first chinese drama serial. RIP, Wen Yong.

Huang Wenyong, 60, dies of cancer

Veteran actor's death comes weeks after he reassured fans he was well, despite looking ill

By Feng Zengkun

Veteran actor Huang Wenyong died in hospital yesterday evening, just weeks after he reassured fans that he was well. He was 60.

Responding to queries last night, MediaCorp said he died from cancer.

His colleagues told The Sunday Times that he seemed sick since November last year, but they did not know what ailed him.

Huang was photographed looking pale and haggard at Channel 8's 30th Drama Anniversary Show.

He told the media then that he had lost about 8kg due to stomach flu, which he had been suffering from since last September, while filming the Channel 8 drama It's A Wonderful Life.

Actress Xiang Yun, who played his on-screen wife in several television shows, said his death was a shock to his colleagues. "I thought he was getting better. This was very sudden and it's very hard to take."

Born in Malaysia, Huang joined what was then the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation in 1980, and was one of the pioneers of local Chinese dramas.

Fame came a few quick years later in 1984, with his portrayal of earnest Chinese immigrant Ah Shui in seminal drama series The Awakening.

The 27-episode drama spanned the arrival of migrants to Singapore to the Republic's post-independence development, and was the first local Chinese drama to be aired overseas, in China.

His on-screen romance with Xiang Yun in the show was also the stuff of local legend. The two would play husband and wife in the long-running 2003 family drama Holland V, and again in the 2010 series The Score.

Although Huang's leading man looks lasted well into his 50s, he often played against type, portraying varied roles such as a wife abuser and an uncouth, unmarried oil-rig supervisor with a pot belly.

He was also introduced to younger audiences when he landed the role of lottery-striking taxi driver Ong Kim Lai in the 1990s comedy series Don't Worry, Be Happy.

In more than 30 years with MediaCorp, Huang acted in more than 100 Chinese dramas and sitcoms, and earned numerous acting awards, including the most recent Top 10 Favourite Male Artist Award at the Star Awards in 2011.

Said fellow actor Chen Shu Cheng: "It's a great pity because he was still quite young, and he took care of himself."

Huang leaves a wife and two adult children.
