Hello everyone, this is my first post.
I just discover this forum yesterday and liked it very much.

I have been looking at RIMM (now BBRY) for a while, it is a good investment at below $10 prices. I still think it is undervalued currently, but the margin of safety is much smaller, thus making it less attractive to me.

Looking at this from liquidation perspective:
Market cap is 8.3B while shareholder equity is 9.34B. Deduct equity by intangible (3.11B), we have 6.23B tangible value, or roughly $12 per share.
I regret not buying it in latter half of 2012 where it was selling around $6 to $9, with >25% margin of safety.

But with current price, it is not nearly as attractive and I have no idea how successful BB10 will be, it is in a too hard/not sure category for me.

IMHO, Blackberry's main competition has never been Apple, it is the countless number of low priced Android phones that pushed BB to the situation it is in now.
^^ you are right in a sense but iPhone was the catalyst to move from keyboard based smartphones to touch. Just like Motorola lost their edge when they insisted on Razr form factor when market was moving from clamshell. RIMM wasn't able to sharpen its edge on keyboard based device

As discussed, he other edge was push email. When Microsoft and others were able to do that effectively, RIMM also lost the edge. RIMM is where it is because it rested on its laurels assuming loyal users will carry the day.
Next game changer product for the company?

Hands on with the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone

SINGAPORE — The long awaited BlackBerry Z10 smartphone will be launched the first week of next month — specifically on March 7. If reports are to believed, the handset had made record sales in Canada and the United Kingdom, with some retail partners saying they had sold out in the first weekend.

It’s not difficult to see why. We were able to get a sneak peek at the touchscreen model ahead of its launch with Senior Director, Asia-Pacific Product Management, BlackBerry Damian Tay. At first impressions, the Z10 is a sleek device that is weighted nicely and feels solid. A rubberised back cover provides adequate grip yet does not look cheap.

Pentagon unveils plan to tap potential of mobile devices

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon unveiled a plan yesterday to ultimately enable the United States Defence Department’s 600,000 users of smartphones, computer tablets and other mobile devices to rapidly share classified and protected data using the latest commercial technologies.

The system aims to quickly enable the latest technologies to be securely used by the military while remaining “device agnostic,” said Major General Robert Wheeler, a Defence Department deputy chief information officer.

British government deems new BlackBerry OS ‘not safe’ enough

LONDON — BlackBerry’s new BB10 software has been rejected by the British government as not secure enough for essential work, the Guardian can reveal.

The news is a blow to hopes that the new operating system, released on the Z10 handset in January, would spark a rapid revival in the company’s fortunes after a torrid year of losses.

The previous BlackBerry version, 7.1, was cleared by the United Kingdom’s Communications-Electronics Security Group (CESG) in December 2012 for classifications up to “Restricted” — two levels below “Secret”.

But the Guardian understands that tests on BB10 and the BlackBerry Balance software, intended to separate work and personal accounts and prevent any copying of data between them, have shown that it fails the same security requirements. BlackBerry has confirmed that BB10 has not been passed yet by CESG, but could not offer a date when revised software would be submitted.

‘Tablets dead in five years’: BlackBerry CEO

LOS ANGELES — BlackBerry Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins said the popularity of tablet computers may wane, an indication the company may shelve a follow-up to its ill- fated PlayBook device.

“In five years I don’t think there’ll be a reason to have a tablet anymore,” Mr Heins said in an interview at the Milken Institute conference in Los Angeles. “Maybe a big screen in your workspace, but not a tablet as such. Tablets themselves are not a good business model.”

Challenges to Blackberry's dominance of the secure mobile phone market have arrived. Samsung's devices, running a secure version of Andriod, have been approved for use by the US Department of Defense. It is expected that Apple might win approval in the future.
