Well said. And that's still the biggest risk in UMS. The most critical concern for UMS is whether they can still secure future business at reasonable price levels in 2017.

Any advanced tech node projects are only done on a prototype level. For adcanced tech node products to reach mass production volume, that will take several years.

I don't imagine many shareholders would be pleased if UMS spent cash on R&D projects thereby reducing the cash-flow available for distributions.

very interesting. please share more on these videos haha. it's going to be a slowdown but once they have new products the capex will come back swiftly.

any good videos on banks cutting down on lending? this is imo the most direct and fundamental place to look for source of problem in any industry.

I would beg to differ. I think it would depend on the type of research UMS carries out. If UMS were to participate in research projects with AMAT, such as the one with AMAT n A*STAR, it would signify the solification n deepening of the UMS-AMAT relationship. Albeit there would be a reduction in distributable cash, but the longer term benefits would outweigh the short term sacrifice.

With that in mind, I think UMS should actively seek to involve themselves in AMAT's research projects, thereby making themselves indispensible or at least less dispensible in the foreseeable future. I would imagine most serious investors would rather collect a few cents/share less n have UMS have secure a secured cash flow for another more 5 years than getting that few cents/share more n risk losing that "cash cow" in a year or 2.

Applied Materials and A*STAR Announce New R&D Joint Lab in Singapore for Advanced Semiconductor Technology
  • New S$150 million joint investment is expected to create 60 jobs for highly skilled scientists, engineers and researchers.

SINGAPORE, October 19, 2015 - Applied Materials, Inc. today announced it plans to establish a new R&D laboratory in Singapore in collaboration with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). The S$150 million joint investment will focus on developing advanced semiconductor technology to fabricate future generations of logic and memory chips.


The S$150 million joint lab will be housed within A*STAR's new R&D cluster at Fusionopolis Two and will feature a 400 square meter Class 1 cleanroom with state-of-the-art semiconductor process equipment that has been custom designed and built by Applied Materials. The facility will be staffed by 60 highly skilled researchers and scientists, working together with extended research teams at A*STAR's other research institutes.


The joint lab combines Applied Materials' leading expertise in materials engineering with A*STAR's multi-disciplinary R&D capabilities. A*STAR's Institute of Microelectronics (IME), Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), and Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) will contribute to research in low-defect processing, ultra-thin film materials, materials analysis and characterization, and modelling and simulation in many areas. The joint lab is also supported by The Singapore Economic Development Board, and is in line with its efforts to promote leading-edge R&D and advanced manufacturing activities. The intention is for products developed by the joint lab to be manufactured by Applied Materials in Singapore. In addition, Applied Materials plans to conduct experiments on the synchrotron at the Singapore Synchrotron Light Source (SSLS) and work with the National University of Singapore where a new beamline for semiconductor applications is to be developed. Funding for the construction of the new beamline is supported by the National Research Foundation.


Mr. Gary Dickerson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Applied Materials, Inc., said, "A*STAR and the government of Singapore have been great R&D partners for Applied Materials. This technology will pioneer new processes and techniques to advance the fabrication of semiconductor devices."


The new joint lab marks Applied Materials' second collaboration with A*STAR. In 2012, Applied and A*STAR's IME formed a Center of Excellence in Advanced Packaging in Singapore to develop advanced 3D chip packaging technology.

One has to understand the kind of R&D work that AMAT is doing and the kind of services that UMS provide to AMAT. UMS only provide testing/assembly services and machined parts like slit valve doors, chambers bodies etc to AMAT. Advanced tech nodes equipments are usually retrofitted from existing production equipments with some modifications. UMS may be asked by AMAT to provide some modifications to the parts of the retrofitted process tools. But they are not in any way indispensable even if they provide the parts during new process development. That's because AMAT owns the designs and UMS is just an outsourcing supplier.

The Philadelphia semicon index has been making highs due to the recent spate of M&A deals or potential M&A deals. Typically, when technology companies' earnings growth starts to stagnate and the companies start to acquire other companies to boost their EPS instead of investing on innovation to drive future growth, that tells us that the cyclical peak is already over.

Well, I guess it all boils down to the “partnership model”.
 
It is a SGD 150 million joint R&D investment.
 
A 1% stake would cost 1.5 million
 
A 5% stake would cost 7.5 million
 
A 10% stake would cost 15 million.
 
From pure equity funding perspective, I think UMS could afford to take up a 5% stake, if not more, if the R&D investment partnership model could tailor for that.  
 
That said, investment in R&D is a different ball game altogether with different risk/return profile.
 
Not all R&D efforts would end with innovation and be successful. 
 
Not all innovation is profitable.
 
Who knows, UMS could be “indirectly” involved in one way or another in the R&D efforts via its “strategic partnership model” with AMAT.
