Q: How big is your spreadsheet?
A: It is small with my 100G storage space

Q: how long does it take to load?
A: It is fast even with my 1.66GHz processor. Fast enough to get ready before i mind is ready to start

Q: what happens if it gets corrupted?
A: I had been adviced long time ago, long back to my U time.. backup is the key word.

No offend.. Tongue

why does that sound so sacarstic. i am asking a realistic question and this is the kind of answer that i get. regarding the corrupted does it ever gets corrupted?
For fellow forummers who are not aware, Drizzt created an innovative Google spreadsheet that tracks his portfolio. So, I think he is quite an expert on spreadsheets. Check it out.

Advantages of about putting the spreadsheet onto the cloud are;
1. The risk of misplacement or data loss due to hard disk crash is lower.
2. Can more easily access the spreadsheet from any location whether it is home, office or on vacation.

eh thanks hyom. but my spreadsheet is perhaps not like what Musicwhiz talks about. for a lot of the mortgage and expenses stuff u guys probably are more expert then me using spreadsheet.

i am just curious after so much entries was it a big problem.

Hi Drizzt,

If the Excel worksheet tracks hundreds of stocks/options with complex mathematical calculations for each, it may be a problem.

For personal finance tracking, it should not be a problem. I doubt the number of entries and the formula behind each entry are so complicated that it will slow down Excel even on a slow computer.

ah thanks. most of my tracking worksheets are pretty small, but my quicken since 2003 have been increasing to a rather large size. even its loading takes time now. i am just wondering if its a big thing for excel.

there is always the risk of accidental modification of data though for excel.

in any case it would be great to share your spreadsheets.

The spreadsheet won't become too massive and load slowly if you archive and renew you spreadsheet on a regular basis eg. Yearly, especially those that tracks expenses, stock transactions,... The other possiblility would be due to having too many macros and charts, so, can reduce those if it's affecting the loading.

Just remember to keep it simple and do regular maintenance ie. delete stuff... In my case, I now have to add comments, else, I can forget what my formulas are tracking.. Big Grin
With today technology, size and speed are not essential for Excel. We are not going down "lean programming race" anymore.
My file which to me is quite complex with the formulas and link, is less than 3MB. I avoid having pictures included.

I do sometime move tab sheet or certain section to another file which do not required to be in same file or seldom needs access.
And have a personal habits to do backup by approx. monthly.

The main thing which fail to mention here which i feel is important, is Security.
I have extra psswords lock on both my file and my thumb drive.

Ops. Be sacarstic is never the intention, just try to be funny. The original message is "with today technologies, size and speed is not an serious concern anymore, I use backup as solution for file corruption, which i practice back to my U time"

I had "弄巧成拙"

I unreservedly apologised to Drizzt for the distress and embarrassment caused to him by my posting.
