Samsung infringed Apple’s ‘bounce back’ patent, Tokyo court rules

TOKYO - A Tokyo court ruled today (June 21) that Samsung Electronics had infringed on rival Apple’s patent for a “bounce-back” feature on earlier models of its popular smartphones.

Samsung and Apple, the world’s top two smartphone makers, are fighting patent disputes in 10 countries as they compete to dominate the lucrative mobile market and win customers with their latest gadgets.

Similar feature already available in Samsung S4's Smart Scroll. IMO it is not user friendly at the moment. I wish Apple will provide a much better user friendlier implementation...

Next iPhone could be controlled with head movements

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple’s latest software will allow users to control iPhones and iPads simply by tilting their head to one side or another.

A left tilt of the head can be used to swipe through screen menu options, or users can choose to use head movements to activate a number of other functions, including the home button, to start Siri, open the Notification Center or App Switcher, or change the volume.

Samsung overtakes Apple for mobile web usage: Report

LONDON – Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer now also accounts for the most mobile web usage, claims a report that also puts Google Chrome ahead of Internet Explorer in America.

Users of Apple’s iPhone and iPad have long accounted for a disproportionate part of global web usage, because the devices are widely acknowledged as the first to make web browsing easy on mobile.

America falls out of love with Apple and Google

NEW YORK - Apple and Google have failed to make the list of the 10 best-perceived brands of 2013 so far in the United States.

Market research from YouGov BrandIndex revealed that neither of the tech companies had made the cut. Apple fell from the list in the second half of last year, which saw Google placed 10th of 10. Six months on and the search giant has also slipped from favour, despite its web presence and increasing sales in the Chromebook and Android markets.

Apple, however, continues to score highly in smartphone customer satisfaction surveys. Earlier this year, the iPhone was ranked number one in smartphone customer satisfaction by JD Power and Associates for the ninth consecutive time. The model scored particularly highly in terms of physical design and ease of operation, scoring 855 points out of a possible 1,000.

Apple to develop ad-skipping tech for TV: Reports

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is developing ad-skipping technology that would let owners of its Apple TV set-top box and future television devices watch shows without commercials, sources with knowledge of the matter said.

Apple executives have briefed at least two owners of broadcast TV networks and cable channels, as well as some of the biggest United States pay-TV systems, said the sources, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. One proposal is for Apple to reimburse programmers for skipped ads, they said.

Apple buys 2 startups to improve its mobile maps

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple has bought online mapping services HopStop and Locationary as part of its ongoing effort to create a more formidable alternative to Google’s navigation system.

The acquisitions confirmed yesterday (July 19) give Apple more tools to round out the maps that it embeds in the mobile operating system running its iPhones and iPads. Apple relied on Google for the built-in maps on those devices until switching to its own system last year.
