SPH attracts short-sellers ahead of earnings

SINGAPORE (Oct 13): Short-sellers looking to make money are taking aim at publisher Singapore Press Holdings (Valuation: 2.00, Fundamental: 1.60), Markit data shows, making it the second most-shorted company in Asia after Toyko’s U-Shin ahead of earnings despite a slightly better performance in its stock price this year than Singapore's benchmark index.

A full 7.8% of SPH's shares are outstanding on loan as of the end of last week, Markit says, as the firm struggles to increase revenue in an embattled industry

The revenue and profit are expected by the analysts and probably the short-seller. Dividend cut is a trend since 2012. Let's see the response of Mr. Market tomorrow...

SPH cuts dividend as FY15 earnings slip 20.4% to $321.7 mil

SINGAPORE (Oct 13): Singapore Press Holdings ( Valuation: 2.00, Fundamental: 1.60)' earnings for the financial year ended Aug 31 have tumbled 20.4% to $321.7 million from $404.3 million a year ago.

The poorer bottom line was mainly attributed to lower fair value gain on investment properties and the one-off gain in the previous year from a partial divestment.

The media group recorded a fair-value gain on investment properties of $36.3 million in FY15, compared with $109.1 million in FY14.

Revenue fell 3.1% to $1.18 billion from $1.22 billion previously. This was despite "better results" by its property segment to cushion the decline in its media business, it says.

The group says revenue from the media business fell 6.3% compared with last year, mainly due to a 7.4% decline in advertisement revenue.

SPH proposes a final dividend of 13 cents per share, which comprise a normal dividend of 8 cents per share and a special dividend of 5 cents per share. The total dividend payout for fiscal 2015 will be 20 cents, slightly below the 21 cent payout in fiscal 2014.

SPH reckons the operating environment will likely remain "challenging" for the year. That said, the media group still sees growth in its digital media revenues and will pursue other growth opportunities.

Shares in SPH ended up one cent or 0.3% at $4.

I guess those are amateurs, with naked short. I will call them gamblers, rather than short-sellers.  Big Grin

Mr. Market has proven the short-sellers are right now, and not sure how far they are right...

You are surprised on the gambling volume?

FYI, Marina Bay Sands Operations (Singapore) gambling revenue is more than 650 million per quarter, thus more than 7 million per day.  Tongue

BTW, the naming of amateur, isn't based on the amount of money, but the way it was executed, which caused SGX to do buying-in, before the result is announced (when verdict arrived)
