SALE OF STAKE IN 701SEARCH PTE. LTD.

Very interesting. Considering that SPH has been trying hard and buying a lot of websites, why would it sell part of this one away?

It's stated in the announcement,

By including the Purchaser as a joint venture partner, 701Search will be able to reap potential synergies by leveraging on Telenor’s established Asian telecommunications network, mobile internet capabilities and subscriber base. Telenor's expertise in mobile is also useful as 701Search brings online classifieds into the mobile sphere. Together with Schibsted, which brings extensive knowledge and experience from the online classifieds business as well as SPH, a leading media company in Singapore with expertise in print and online advertising, 701Search will greatly benefit from the contributions of all three shareholders when the transactions are completed.
As expected, no surprise...

Nay. SPH is the big winner here - not in monetary term but in term of turf protection which is huge.

Think about it. SPH was charging for online content. Yahoo is giving free news online. If you are in the business of providing news for a fee (like SPH), you will fight tooth and nail to protect your turf.

And considering that this is the first traditional print (SPH) vs online media company (yahoo) lawsuit in Spore, its implications will be felt henceforth. No other online media companies operating out of Spore can do the same and hope to get away with it.

So in the end, its not about the monetary compensation but turf protection which is ultimately more important.

Yes, fully agree. It is even more critical, during the transitional period from paper to digital now. It shows that SPH has way, and is serious to protect the right.
