S'pore's retail sales up 8.1% on-year

SINGAPORE: Singapore's retail sales went up 8.1 per cent in April on-year. According to the Department of Statistics, retail sales would have increased 10.1 per cent if motor vehicles were excluded.

Month-on-month, April's retail sales rose a seasonally adjusted 5.7 per cent.

Excluding motor vehicles, retail sales rose 3.8 per cent in April compared to March.

Retailers of watches and jewellery recorded a significant sales increase of 29.6 per cent in April compared to a year ago.

Retail sales of petrol service stations, apparel & footwear, medical goods & toiletries and department stores also recorded double digit growth.

On the other hand, retailers of furniture & household equipment reported a sales decline of 1.4 per cent in April on-year.

Meanwhile, restaurant receipts increased 2.2 per cent, while fast food outlet receipts rose 1.9 per cent on-month.

However, turnover of food caterers fell 1.0 per cent for the same period.
